RESPONSIBILITY: The Pro Bono Legal Assistance Project is a collaborative project between the partner law firms of Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO) and Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE). The purpose of this project is to increase opportunities for law students to participate in pro bono activities while also increasing support and assistance for volunteer attorneys in LAWO's 32-county service area. The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellow will cultivate relations with law school students and faculty, and will work with legal aid staff, volunteer lawyers, government leaders, court personnel, judges, and bar leaders in an effort to raise the awareness and visibility of pro bono work while expanding opportunities for participation. The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellow will work with law schools to recruit and train students; work with legal aid staff on special rural pro bono and low income taxpayer projects; provide referrals and support to volunteer lawyers; develop community education and pro se materials; and provide direct legal assistance to low income clients. QUALIFICATIONS: Attorney candidates should be admitted to the Ohio Bar or be eligible for temporary certification in Ohio. Recent law graduates should be prepared to take and pass the next Ohio Bar exam. Candidates should also: - Be highly motivated and committed to the principle of equal justice. - Have excellent communication skills and enjoy working with people, especially law students. - Have excellent research and writing skills. - Take initiative and be a leader. - Be creative and willing to accept responsibility for challenging projects. - Have good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks. - Ability to speak Spanish is helpful. BENEFITS: Compensation is set by Federal statute. For each year of service, an Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellow will receive: - A living allowance up to $22,800 per year. - Health insurance and eligibility for child care assistance. - A $4,725 education award from AmeriCorps. - Loan forbearance and interest accrual payment for government student loans. - Loan repayment assistance from the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation up to $6,000 per year. - Actual moving expense and Bar admission assistance up to $3,500. - Participation in LAWO s comprehensive substantive and skills training program. - Payment of local bar dues. - Travel reimbursement. - The opportunity to join a staff of outstanding and experienced advocates in a law firm with an outstanding reputation.
